"STOP!" yelled Ed. His voice a wave of restraint washing over the shore of stupefied 6th-12th graders in the gym. "Sometimes a good idea just doesn't turn out."
As CAG told me this story about school, I was awed that such a profound observation could come from such an absurd situation. It made me wonder how many of life's important lessons come hand-in-hand with vomiting.
You see, this is Spirit Week at CAG's school. Every day has a different theme for dressing up along with silly bonding activities devised by the kids. The grades compete to win Spirit Week, earning bragging rights for the rest of the school year.
Momentus Wednesday's activities were:
Dress BCE*
Tricycle Races
Spelling Bee
Eating Contest
Well, not just any Eating Contest. A Gross Food Eating Contest. Foods included one whole peeled lemon, a sardine smoothie (sardines, milk and ice), ice cream with sauerkraut and head cheese. Can you see where this is going? Into trash cans for several contestants.
The contest was quickly aborted by Ed because too many contestants threw up. (If you're familiar with the movie "Stand By Me," you'll know the scene this evoked in my mind.) Ed was right. This was definitely an idea that didn't work ... and couldn't be stomached.
I'm afraid CAG's 10th grade is going to have a hard time stomaching Friday's Spirit Week finale. Her grade's hubris from winning last year equals trouble, as hubris always does. On Wednesday, this year's repeat lead took a turn, leaving them eating the seniors' dust.
The 10th grade's "we're all that" bad-ittude and in-your-face T-shirts will be another addition to the Gross Food Eating Contest. Humble pie.
Get ready to gag, 10th grade. Your side of hard-learned lesson is waiting.
*If you're old school like me and this is strange, BCE (Before Common Era) has replaced BC. For example, the Trojan War took place in the 12th century BCE. Unlike Metric, though, it doesn't require conversion.
